Don't put the B in Bride

There is no doubt being a bridesmaid is tough. It costs a lot of money, a lot of time and its stressful. Your friends say yes to being part of your wedding because a). They’re a good friend, b) They want to be part of your special day and c) They simply just love you. Being a bride does not mean you have free rein to treat them however you like. With the stress of wedding planning, some brides forget and become bat shit crazy, unkind. As important as your special day is, it is important your friends still love you when the wedding is over and you’re back to your regular scheduled program.

Here are some friendly reminders on how to be a respectful bride, and more importantly, a good friend.

  1. Ask them to be your bridesmaid in a special way

In the next few months, the girls will be trying their best to prioritizing you. They are putting time, money and effort to you and your wedding so it is important you make the effort to honor them in a special way. One way is to put effort in asking them to be part of your day. Regardless on how much or how little your bridesmaids will do for you, this person is special, so ask them in a special way.

  2. Be clear when delegating duties

Hiring a day-of coordinator would be ideal but if your budget is limited, be organized and be clear when delegating duties. You have been planning the wedding for months so you would know the in’s and out’s of the plans. Do not expect your bridesmaids to know every detail. The wedding day will be hectic so be sure to plan ahead when delegating tasks.

  3. Be conscious of their time

    a) Dress shopping: It takes awhile to find THE dress. Have appointments lined up to minimize the days spent looking for the dress. Do not have one appointment a day, and spread out throughout the week.

    b) Do not demand everyone to be there for all wedding activities/appointments.

  4. Feed them!

Hell hath no fury like a woman starved. Make sure you have breakfast, lunch, coffee and champagne ready! Prepare some straws so your girls don’t ruin their lipstick!

  5. Be flexible in dress choices

All bodies are different and all bodies are beautiful. Let them decide what type of dress looks best on them.

  6. Spend some time with them during the wedding

Make an effort to spend time with your bridesmaid during the wedding. After the stress of getting ready all day, it’s nice to let loose and have fun enjoying the wedding with your ‘maids! We have the makeup, the hair and the dress, why not take the opportunity to take a nice photo with your friend. Take at least one professional photo with each bridesmaid.

  7. Give them plus ones!

Celebrate your love by honoring theirs! Give them the option to invite their significant other and help them avoid the awkwardness of having to ask.

  8. Don’t forget to say and show how grateful you are

Thank them and tell them you appreciate them. Tell them in person, tell them in a card, tell them through your actions. At the end of the night, emotions run high and you will be overwhelmed and thankful. Be prepared for it!
